Revive confidence with breast augmentation

Feeling comfortable with your appearance is not always a simple task, and not everyone is satisfied with a figure that doesn't meet their ideas of what they consider beautiful. Your breasts can dictate confidence in your femininity; the feeling that you can do nothing to fix it can be overwhelming. Dr. Andres offers breast augmentation in Scottsdale to women looking to enhance their naturally given forms and revive their self-esteem.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the size of the breasts, addressing symmetry, volume, fullness, and shape. Breast augmentation is performed with various implant sizes and types that women can choose from to suit their personal aesthetic goals of achieving a curvy, appealing, and feminine silhouette.

Why breast augmentation?

Each woman has a personal and unique concept of beauty, and how they would like to view herself, and breast augmentation can help her achieve her aesthetic goals.

The breasts can deflate and change due to the following:

  • Weight loss
  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

These changes can result in asymmetry, smaller size, and a less appealing shape. Breast augmentation restores a round, full-breast appearance. Women who have always had smaller breasts may wish for a larger size, more cleavage, or a more shapely figure. Other women may want to correct asymmetrical breasts for a more balanced appearance. Dr. Andres can resolve all of these issues with breast augmentation.

What are the benefits of breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation can help you to:

  • Create symmetry between both breasts if previously unbalanced
  • Enjoy a balanced and feminine silhouette for your frame
  • Increase self-confidence and appreciation of your body
  • Achieve fuller and more youthful  breasts
  • Restore volume to breasts that have diminished in size due to childbirth or weight loss

Am I a candidate for breast augmentation?

Regarding age, clients pursuing breast enhancement should be at least 18 years old for saline breast implants and at least 22 years old for silicone breast implants. There is no upper age limit for surgery, although patients must be healthy, non-smokers without significant medical issues that may interfere with their surgery or recovery. It is often recommended that patients be finished with pregnancy and breastfeeding before undergoing breast augmentation because childbearing or weight changes may alter the shape and size of the breasts, necessitating a revision procedure in the future.

Breast augmentation expectations and results

Patients must have realistic expectations for their breast augmentation surgery. Many women desire to look like celebrities they see in films or on TV. While breast surgery can help fill out your figure and enhance your confidence in your appearance, it cannot make you look like a completely different person or compensate for emotional issues. You must discuss your goals for surgery in depth with the doctor before moving forward so that you are informed, educated, and empowered to make the best choices for your future.

What to expect from your breast augmentation procedure

  • Our breast augmentation procedure is generally performed as an outpatient procedure using IV sedation or general anesthesia, delivered exclusively under the care of a board-certified anesthesiologist.
  • After making the incision, Dr. Andres precisely establishes a perfect pocket for the breast implant.
  • For a breast augmentation surgery, a breast implant, which will have been discussed and chosen in advance by Dr. Andres and the patient, is positioned behind the breast through a small incision.
  • The placement of the said incision will be based on the patient’s preference as well as what Dr. Andres finds most appropriate for your desired results.
  • The ideal placement of this pocket is contingent on the amount of existing natural breast tissue, what kind of implant was chosen, and the outcome that the patient wishes to achieve.

How long is the procedure?

Breast augmentation surgery, often called a “boob job”, takes approximately 2 hours. If part of a Mommy Makeover procedure, it can be a few hours more.

What is the recovery from breast augmentation surgery?

After breast augmentation, patients usually go home on the same day of their surgery. It's normal to initially have some bruising, swelling, and a general feeling of tightness in the chest area. You will be given a surgical support bra to assist with the healing process. You should wear this bra consistently for the first several weeks. You should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for the first few weeks. Typically, patients can return to their daily routine, including work, within a week or so. More strenuous activity may be taken up again 4 to 6 weeks after your surgery.

What to know after your breast augmentation surgery

Taking a step towards breast implant surgery is significant in loving your body. Learning to care for your implants and provide the proper support for them is essential to ensure long-term health and results.

Support is key

Supporting your new breasts with appropriate undergarments is one of the most important ways to care for your new curves. Since you've just added extra weight to your breasts, providing proper support will ensure that they maintain their new, plump shape.

Massage

If you want your breasts to stay happy and healthy, massaging them daily will help to keep your implants in place and allow them to move freely under the skin. Daily massage for just a few minutes will keep them happy.

Have your breast imaged

Have your breasts scanned after a few years to identify potential problems. While modern breast implants rarely rupture, early detection is vital for your health. Breast implants have a “shelf life” and may need replacement every ten to fifteen years, although some last far longer for breast implant rupture or capsular contracture.

Keep your yearly exams

Breast implants can make detecting changes in your natural breast tissue more difficult. Regular mammograms and self-exams are essential to safeguarding your breast health.

You have dreamed of having these fabulous new curves for years. Just a little care to safeguard your investment in your body (not to mention your self-esteem) will do wonders for you. Now, all that you need to do is to plan your wardrobe for your new curves.

How to choose a plastic surgeon for your breast augmentation in Scottsdale

Dr. Lewis Albert Andres is a board-certified plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He has been honored as a Top Doc in Phoenix Magazine for the past several consecutive years and is considered one of the best breast surgeons in Scottsdale and the Phoenix areas.

We understand that the choice to have breast augmentation is a highly personal one, and Dr. Andres honors that choice. It is a task that can seem daunting, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Your peace of mind is our priority.

What should I ask my surgeon before my procedure?

Here are a few questions that we hope will aid in your decision-making process:

  • Is your surgeon a Plastic Surgeon? Your first step is to find a board-certified plastic surgeon recognized for excellent work in breast augmentation in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Your final appearance is one with which you will need to be happy for years. Ensuring that you have a qualified plastic surgeon to perform your surgery is of utmost importance.
  • How many breast augmentation surgeries does your surgeon perform each year? Your surgeon needs to have experience so that you feel comfortable. Too few surgeries each year, and that surgeon may not have the expertise in breast augmentation to give you confidence that you will be pleased with your result. Too many surgeries, however, can leave you with a surgeon who is tired and performing at less-than-peak status or operates as a “factory”.  Find a happy medium that makes you most comfortable with your decision of your surgeon.
  • Where will my breast augmentation surgery be performed? No matter who your surgeon is, your surgery should be performed at a hospital or certified outpatient surgical center to ensure that your health and safety are monitored as they should be. For your safety, we only operate at licensed, accredited facilities.
  • What are the risks of breast augmentation? Like any surgery, there are risks associated with breast augmentation. These risks include but are not limited to, bleeding, infection, hematoma, scarring, implant complications, and dissatisfaction with your surgical outcome. Be sure to weigh all options and risks before you have breast augmentation and discuss these with your surgeon.

Different types of breast implants

Dr. Lewis Albert Andres offers several types of breast implants in Phoenix/Scottsdale and will discuss all of the options with you during your consultation so that you can make an informed decision. The type of implant that you will receive will depend on the final look that you envision and your preferences for firmness, projection, and feel.

There are two main types of implants: silicone and saline. Technological advances have led to multiple varieties of both types, each offering specific advantages.

All about saline breast implants

Saline implants are filled with a saline (saltwater) solution with a silicone shell. They are FDA-approved for women over eighteen years of age, and the implants are filled after placement in order to produce the firmness and size that you desire. If an implant ruptures, which is far less common with the latest generation of saline implants, the saline solution is non-toxic.

Things to know about silicone implants

Silicone breast implants consist of an outer silicone shell, like the saline variety, which is filled with a silicone, cohesive gel. Past silicone implants were filled with liquid silicone, but advancements have led to silicone gel, which produces a beautiful, firm look and feel, leading to an enhanced breast.

What are some of the benefits of saline breast implants?

  • They are filled after placement and require smaller incisions
  • The body quickly absorbs the solution within, should the implant rupture, and it is easier to identify if there is a rupture, as the implant will deflate
  • The placement of saline implants is a more straightforward procedure due to the flexibility of the outer shell, making it possible to fill the implant after being placed. Small incisions are typically hidden in the crease beneath the breast, armpit, or within the border of the nipple
  • In general, saline implants are also less expensive than silicone implants. Surgery-related costs will remain the same, but the implants themselves are less costly
  • The latest generation of the saline implant is structured, with an inner shell around the chamber holding the saline solution, with several “baffle” shells to provide more structure.
  • Together, this provides a more natural feel and bounce than earlier versions

While implant rupture is rare, some women hesitate to have silicone implants, even though the FDA has established thorough, extensive research that they do not pose a danger to health.

Advantages of silicone breast implants

  • Traditional saline breast implants have an increased risk of implant rippling due to ripples caused by the thinner solution within the outer shell. Silicone implants are less likely to ripple because the newer silicone gel holds its shape better.
  • The latest versions are available in more sizes and shapes than ever before and can produce reconstructed or enhanced breasts that are beautiful and natural-appearing.
  • Silicone implants will not collapse or deflate when ruptured because of the structure provided by the silicone gel within.
  • The result of breast augmentation can appear completely natural, soft, resilient, and exceptionally attractive.
  • These implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue and are a very popular choice.

Where are the incisions for breast augmentation placed?

To insert implants, incisions may be made across the areola, below the breasts, or in the armpits.

Inframammary

A common incision site is in the fold beneath the breasts, just above where the breasts and rib cage meet. This incision allows for more options in where the implant will be placed, an essential point in achieving a natural look and feel. Once healed, the incision is hidden within bras or bikini tops.

Transaxillary

This incision is only placed in the armpit for saline implants. A channel is created, and the saline implant is carefully placed and filled.

Periareolar

For some patients, an incision is made beneath the areola, the outer colored part of the nipple structure. Through the incision, a pocket is created beneath the breast into which the implant will be placed. This incision is appropriate for some patients and some sizes of implants and can reduce the risk of a visible scar.

Where are breast implants placed?

Additionally, there are two common locations within the breast where the implant may be placed:

  • Subglandular: Under your breast tissue, yet atop your pectoralis muscle.
  • Subpectoral/Dual-plane: Under your breast tissue and beneath your pectoralis muscle.

What is the cost of breast implants?

The cost of breast augmentation can vary widely, depending on the type of implant chosen and any additional fees or associated procedures. On average, costs typically range between $6,000 to $12,000.

How long is the recovery for breast augmentation?

What will happen during your consultation?

What is the goal of breast augmentation?

Is breast augmentation surgery painful?

The surgery itself is not very painful for the patient, but does involve incisions. These incisions can be uncomfortable in the early stages of healing, but you will have prescription medication to keep you comfortable, which is typically unnecessary after a few days. Most patients upon whom we perform breast enhancement tell us that recovery was less of a problem than they expected. Dr. Andres uses highly advanced surgical techniques to limit incision size as well as a rapid-recovery type of breast surgery.

Will I need a breast lift with my augmentation?

If you see your breasts sagging after pregnancy and breastfeeding or due to aging skin, you may need a breast lift along with augmentation in order to achieve the look that you envision for yourself. A private consultation will reveal whether this is necessary in your individual case.

Are there natural ways to enhance breasts?

While you may see promotions for creams that increase breast size, these do not work. One method that does not involve breast implants is a natural fat transfer breast augmentation; however, this procedure cannot significantly increase breast size and is appropriate for patients who want a moderate increase in breast size or want improved shape.

How can I ensure that my breasts will look how I imagined?

Dr. Andres will offer that you use his sizing system as well as show you many images of women with similar body types before and after the surgery. The main point in achieving the breasts that you envision is open, accessible communication with Dr. Andres. He will advise you about the types and sizes of implants that will achieve your desired look, an accurate surgical approach to your individual body, as well as help you decide together what will be best for you in regards to your goals and expectations. Do I need a mammogram before my augmentation surgery?

Some women, depending on age or breast history, will be advised to have a mammogram before their breast augmentation surgery to rule out the presence of breast cancer. A mammogram is a simple procedure; once complete, you can proceed to surgery with confidence that your breasts are in good health.

Will my implants need replacement in the future?

Implants are artificial prosthetics and eventually may need to be replaced. The question is… how long? Most patients with modern implants can expect them to last a long, long time. The FDA issued a report that revealed the facts about implant replacement. One out of five women will require revision after approximately ten years, while the others must do nothing. It depends on the individual and whether an issue has developed, such as excessive scar tissue affecting breast shape (capsular contracture) or implant rupture.

What anesthesia should I expect during my procedure?

Dr. Andres may suggest three options for anesthesia during your breast augmentation in Phoenix. These are local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or IV sedation. Each type of anesthesia has pros and cons; it is best to select it in consultation with your doctor.

How long is the recovery for breast augmentation?

Every patient who comes to our Scottsdale Plastic Surgery office differs in regards to how quickly the body heals. Generally, younger and healthier patients recover more rapidly. When planning your surgery, you must expect to take at least a week off from any activity that puts additional stress or pulls on the upper body – including stretching, lifting, or raising your arms. You are advised to take at least one week off from work. Some patients may need more time, but a typical patient feels strong enough to return to work (other than jobs requiring heavy physical activities such as lifting) after approximately one week. You will wear a compression garment to secure your new breasts while healing for up to six weeks. Dr. Andres will advise you when you can remove it.

Does breast augmentation have any risks?

All cosmetic surgeries have some risk. As far as the breast augmentation procedure is concerned, some risks include:

  • Surgical and anesthetic risks
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Rippling
  • Implant displacement
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Asymmetry
  • Bleeding and infection
  • Unsatisfactory results

Some of the potential long-term problems may include the following:

  • Implant leakage or deflation: This usually requires implant removal and replacement surgery.
  • Capsular contracture: occurs when the capsule or scar surrounding the implant tightens and squeezes the implant. The patient can feel their breast harden, or potentially pain, when there is capsular contracture.

What will happen during your consultation?

A comfortable, compassionate aura that your surgeon is listening to you will be felt from the first meeting. During your consultation with Dr. Andres, he will review your your medical history, desires regarding physical enhancement through breast augmentation, as well as perform a careful physical examination and breast aesthetic measurement.
